INTRODUCTION

The Department of Sociology, Women’s Christian College is one of the youngest departments which has been able to carve a niche for itself in a short span of time since its inception as a General Subject in the year 2005. The Department aims to foster analytical and critical thinking among its students and has continuously endeavored to incorporate the most contemporary debates, discussions, pedagogy in Sociologyinitsacademiccurriculum.HonourscourseinSociologywasintroduced for the academic session 2012-2013.
Ms. Aditi Basu joined the Department of Sociology on 26th September 2005. She taught for nine months and resigned on 10th May 2006. On 1st July 2006 Mrs. AnweshaPathakChatterjeejoinedtheDepartmentofSociologyon1stJuly2006.At present the Department of Sociology has 3 teachers. Dr. Tumpa Mukherjee has joined in the UGC substantive post as Assistant Professor on 3rd July 2013. Smt. Sathi Naik joined as Contractual Lecturer in 2012. She is a State Aided College Teacherfrom2020.Ms.PretashaBanerjeeresignedasStateAidedCollegeTeacher in June 2024. Ms. Amrin Sarfaraz is serving as Whole Time Contractual Lecturer in the department from 2019. Ms. Anindita Chatterjee served the Department of Sociology from 1st July 2025 to 15th May 2026.
The Department of Sociology, Women’s Christian College is under the University of Calcutta, hence has to follow the syllabus as framed and followed by the University of Calcutta. From the academic session 2018-19, the new Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) syllabus has been introduced for the first-year students. From the academic session 2023-2024 the National Educational Policy 2020 has been 
Implemented where 4 years Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF) for under-graduate programs have been introduced.

Fostering a scientific, in-depth understanding of society, societal structures, promoting critical thinking and inspiring positive societal change through teaching, scholarships and service.

 Faculty & students to engage in pursuits of scholarship, service activities in local and global context.
 To promote empowerment of women.
